Re-animator Project

These three pieces were created for a group show titled “Re-Animator”, curated by artist John Avelluto. The theme of the show was to take existing works of art and refashion them, breathing new life into them. I chose to modernize a 19th century landscape to make it more representative of issues we face in the present day.

Martin Johnson Heade’s Lake George 1862 Revisited is a mixed media triptych that I created based on “Lake George”, an oil painting by Hudson River School artist Martin Johnson Heade.

The Hudson River School romanticized nature as a reaction to the industrial revolution; by refashioning “Lake George” into a degraded landscape, I wish to peel away the saccharin veneer of romantic painting and show more realistic depictions of the American landscape.
